According to the latest entry-exit regulation law, which came into force on 1 July 2013, family visit visas in China mainly include the following types:


Q1 Visa

Q1 visa is issued to those who are family members of Chinese citizens or of foreigners with Chinese permanent residence and intend to go to China for family reunion, or to those who intend to go to China for the purpose of foster care. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.


"Family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law.

Q2 VisaQ2 visa is issued to those who intend to visit their relatives who are Chinese citizens residing in China or foreigners with permanent residence in China. The intended duration of stay in China is no more than 180 days.
S1 VisaS1 visa is issued to those who intend to go to China to visit the foreigners working or studying in China to whom they are spouses, parents, sons or daughters under the age of 18 or parents-in-law, or to those who intend to go to China for other private affairs. The intended duration of stay in China exceeds 180 days.
S2 Visa

S2 visa is issued to those who intend to visit their family members who are foreigners working or studying in China, or to those who intend to go to China for other private matters. The intended duration of stay in China is no more than 180 days.


"Family members" refers to spouses, parents, sons, daughters, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandsons, granddaughters and parents-in-law.




Q Visa


The Q visa is mainly issued to overseas Chinese who apply for visiting family members. This will enable the embassies and consulates of overseas Chinese who apply for a Q visa to issue visas valid for a longer period of time to facilitate their return for family visits. According to the applicant's length of stay in China, there are two specific categories: Q1 and Q2. The Q-Series visas are issued to relatives of Chinese citizens who have acquired citizenship abroad and to relatives of foreigners who are eligible for permanent residence (green card) in China.


Q1. The applicant's relative is a Chinese national and can be granted: 1-3 years' residence permit for multiple visits by foreigners (Q1 visa)

1. Original valid passport (visa is required within the valid period)

2. Original Registration Form for Temporary Accommodation of Persons Outside China

3. Original medical certificate issued by the entry-exit inspection and quarantine department

4. Proof of kinship (e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.)

5. Original letter of commitment for statement of kinship

6. Proof in accordance with the applicant's identity and subject matter is also required


In particular:

1. Relatives means the spouse, parents, children, the spouse, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren of the child

2. A certificate of kinship as submitted, if issued by an overseas institution, must be certified by our Chinese diplomatic and consular missions abroad (valid for six months).

3. A certificate of health may be waived if the initial application (aged 16-60) has to be made in person, and the application is renewed within three months after the expiration of the original residence permit.


Q2. My relative is Chinese, I would like to apply for: 3-6 months of short-term family visit stay (Q2 visa)

1. Original valid passport (visa is required within the valid period)

2. Original Registration Form for Temporary Accommodation of Persons Outside China

3. Original proof of kinship (e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.)

4. Original letter of commitment for statement of kinship

5. The submission of supporting documents that are consistent with the subject matter of the application is also required


In particular:

1. Relatives means the spouse, parents, children, the spouse, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren of the child

2. A certificate of kinship submitted by an overseas institution shall be certified by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in China if it is issued by an overseas institution.




S Visa


S visa is issued to the family members of foreigners who are staying in China for work, study, etc. For the purpose of applying for entry visit, As well as persons who need to stay in China for other personal affairs, they are classified into two specific categories, Q1 and Q2, according to the duration of the applicant's stay in China.


S1. Foreign family members (parents-in-law, wives-children) who come to work in China apply for a residence permit for foreign family members with the employed person

1. Original valid passport of family member (visa is required within valid period)

2. Original Temporary Residence Registration Form for Family Members Outside the Country

3. Original medical certificate issued by the family's entry-exit inspection and quarantine department

4. Copies of the employer's passport and residence permit

5. Letter of application from the employer's company

6. Relevant documents of the employer's company

7. Proof of family relationship (e.g., marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.) Legal certificate of family relationship


In particular:

1. Family means the spouse, parents, children, parents-in-law of the employed person

2. If the applicant enters the country on a S1 visa, the proof of family relationship need not be certified and the original is sufficient; If the applicant is in China on any other visa, his/her family relationship certificate issued outside China must be certified by our Chinese Embassy or Consulate (valid for 6 months); Or certified by its local consulate (valid for 6 months).

3. A certificate of health may be waived if the initial application (aged 16-60) has to be made in person, and the application is renewed within three months after the expiration of the original residence permit.




S2. Short-term visits for family members of foreign nationals working in China and short-term visits for three to six months (S2 visa)

1. Original valid passport of family member (visa is required within valid period)

2. Original Registration Form for Temporary Accommodation of Family Members Abroad (issued by the Guest Hotel or the Local Police Station of this Municipality)

3. Two recent two-inch half-length, bareheaded photographs of family members (4.5CM x 3.5CM)

4. Original passport of the employed person

5. Original Letter of Application from Employer Company (Sample provided by us and sealed by company)

6. Photocopy of the business license and organization code certificate of the employer's company

7. Original proof of family relationship (e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.) Legal certificate of family relationship


In particular:

1. "Family" means the spouse of the employed person, his or her parents, children, spouse of the children, siblings, grandparents, or grandchildren

2. A family relationship certificate issued outside China must be certified by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate abroad (valid for 6 months); Or certified by its local consulate (valid for 6 months).
